Young Girl (Needing Help!)
show user profile  Alisha
Ok i'm modelling a teenager and i'm having some real difficulties with trying to covert an imported model (editable poly) tripple, 3 sided polys into a model that has all 4 sided polys. You can see here that the mesh is not smooth like 4 sided polys and is hard to change the geometry. I modelled this in a totally different modelling program. Any ideas???

What program did you do it in and what format did you export it to?
What settings are there when you export and import?

You might wanna keep an eye on you titles. Young girl needing help doesn't sound quite like MF question :P

Yeah you should be able to sort this in the export/import settings.

If you really cant then search for a script called 'detriangulate'. It does a prettty good job.

Mrgrotey: I got the script but don't know how to use it or install it I put it in the MacroScripts in UI, but don't know how to run it.

utilities / run script / choose script, if it's a .MS script file.

Alternatively, you can go into the edge mode and delete most of the diagonals. Might take you 5 minutes, but this model is not high poly so it shouldn't take too long. Use the backspace key so you don't delete the polys. You will be left with a few triangles which you'll have to take care of, but I cannot imagine it taking more than 5-10 minutes to get rid of the diagonals by hand.

Thanks for all your help. Graphix72: I imported from a DXF export from lightwave modeller and opened it in 3dsmax. basically there were only a few triangulars to delete and i used your backspace method thanks.

The next thing I want todo is the hair, how do you make nice sasquatch like (lightwave 3d) hair in 3dsmax I wonder?

We usually use FBX for LW to max transport and it seems fine. Never saw it triangulate like that.
Obj can work too in some situations, but it screws the entire topology every once in a while

It looks nice, Alisha. The lips are full and the mouth area looks a bit like a person of african or asian descent - which is quite nice since most models we see have the typical european thin lips. I like the fuller lips, personally. I would compliment them with a rounder nose, the nose looks a little out of place because it's too thin an european. Also, it's a little bit too high, if you bring the nose down a bit, I think it will look better. I mean, the tip of the nose should be lower, it's too far up from the lips.

So my suggestions are basically to widen and flatten the nose a bit, and bring it lower. My wife is asian, and her mouth looks a bit like the mouth in your model, but her nose is much rounder.

Other than that, I like the look of the face, I would work out the ears more. They don't look quite natural yet. There are some great tutorials out there, for example the Joan of Arc tutorial, and I have a great DVD I bought called the "Eva Wild" series which also teaches very good modeling techniques from an anatomically correct perspective. If you need help with this model in the future, I'd be willing to spend some time to help you. Especially with problem parts, such as the ears.

Here's a photo reference of someone who has similar facial features. She is Vietnamese, her name is Tai. If you want a full size copy (3600 x 2700 pixels), download it at the following link:

I hope this helps you with your modeling. Notice the round nose, and compare some of the proportions to help you position the nose and work out the ears better. If you need more references, for example for the ears, let me know.

Actually, not bad at all! She looks quite cute. And the face definitely has an expression, which often lacks in other characters. Real people don't look perfect very often, so don't worry if something is not exactly right. I think the face looks very good now, I would fix the nose a little bit more... I think the ridge at the tip is still too sharp. You see the specular highlight? It's just a thin line... it should be more round... but it's up to you. Maybe this girl's nose looks like that.
I think the face is beautiful. I would suggest fixing the ears next. If you don't have references, let me know. I can upload some ear pictures, I have many.
