Xref objects?

i have been trying to use xref objects in my scene, i can get the scene in but i cant then edit it? if i merge it then it is no longer externally referencing from the master scene?

i was hoping to be able to import my scene into different files for different shots, but if later on i need to make a tweak to the models i dont want to have to go back through every file that pre dates the one i am in (this did happen to me on my last uni project) i ended up wasting hours. I know i can return to the master file and make the changes but i still need to be able to animate the objects in my individual shot files?

im sure this is possible but i cant seem to get it working?

xref object is pants. use xref scene instead.

i did try xref scene but this wont allow me to move or animate the object in the the scene unless i merge it? ot am i missing something?

you're missing something. you have to hit bind in the xref scene config dialog to be able to move it.

im not sure how, why or where i got the word above from? but i meant to write "obstacle"

just a quick question of advice,
im currently modelling a series of torches which will be used as an instructional video (turning on, and other features)
the camera will be over the top of the torch during this stage and the light from the torch will be cast onto a wall in front would you render the wall and light within max or after effects?

also not that it will effect me to much att he moment but with the above lethod of binding xref objects to null objects in max, how would this work with a rigged character? or do you not tend to Xref characters into a scene?

the scene-xref of a character should work fine & I'd certainly consider working that way.

big fan of distributed hierarchical scene management.

I don't have much experience doing this in max, so try it. should work fine though.

how would you be able to control the character using the above method? without re-building or binding each element into the scene?

its not something im doing now but would like to learn how this would be done in a professional enviroment?

the character would be animated in its scene. it would be positioned by moving the null it's attached to in the parent scene.

I don't do this right now either so pls let me know if I'm missing something obvious you need to be able to do.
