That`s generally defined as a `sidebar` within your theme. Look in to the theme options and find out how to remove the sidebar from your homepage or page template..

Firefox with Firebug addon helps you easily track down what's going on under the hood in WP templates, they can be a nightmare to edit basic things unless your a php guru.

Removing the sidebar by fiddling with the code might open up more issues. For one all your content will be made to fit the main section so it will look odd with a blank space on the right.

Usually if the theme is well built, it comes with a full width page template which you can choose inside the Wordpress dashboard when creating a page. This will be without any sidebar.

i struggled with this too and found that unfortunately not all themes let you choose 'full width, no side bar' which is what you want - if your theme does have it then it will be under usual page edit, on the right side Page Attributes - Template, then the drop down box will let you choose Full Page as opposed to Default Template if it does have that option.

There's a nice selection of full width templates here...

If you can avoid editing php then do so, wordpress is problematic when editing, it can be a real pain to set up.
