Windows 10 Free Upgrade..
show user profile  ScotlandDave
Microsoft are saying they will be offering free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified devices..

It's a bit vague as to what will qualify, but the small print says:

It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1.

I signed up to it and apparently will get an email about it 'in the coming months'. Anybody know any more about it?

I'll definitely be upgrading. I quite like 10, and hate 8.

If you've got a non-enterprise 7 or 8 (home user), you will be eligible for the upgrade, as I understand it.

On another note, I read this morning that it will be able to run Android apps, which is interesting.

Yeah i read that too..

I wonder if it'll alter the market for Windows Phone, because i quite like WP, but there's currently only Nokia doing handsets for it.. I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that, Android and it's apps is a huge market/revenue, and more Windows Phones would mean cutting into that market, due to the fact that there are less of said apps available on Windows.. Blows my mind though as it's a great OS imo :/

How does it compare to windows 7 pro? Ive got that at home and i quite like it. Just installed 2 boxes at the office that run on 8.1(With bing!) and i hate it. Why is it a improvement over 7?
Can you say why you like it Nik?

It's an improvement because they listened to what people hated about Windows 8, and they fixed a few things. A real Start button, for example. There is talk that Aero is coming back too, although it's not in the version I am using. It seems quite fast, installs very quickly and because it's the only way to get DX12, we will all have to use it eventually.

I still prefer 7. It is the best.

I'll be upgrading. I have a personal W7 license, but am currently using a W8 pc from work. W8 is ok once you disable all metro-style file viewers. I very rarely go into the W8 startmenu, all applications i need are on my taskbar. I find that a fullscreen startmenu on a 24" screen is disorienting (it was clearly designed for tablets). I'll use my W7 license to upgrade to W10 and look forward to getting back the regular start menu.

Seems very suspicious that it would be free... especially after seeing "Kingsman: The Secret Service."

I used XP and then Vista (I know) a lot time after 7 was out before moving to Win7. I suspect I'll do the same for 10. 7 works just fine for me :)

I think the free upgrade deal runs out after a certain date. Could be wrong tho.

Ross yeah it says limited time, the problem is there's no clear indication of when it starts, assuming it's when Win 10 is officially launched..

The performance increase I've seen in some games running DX12 is worth the upgrade alone.
