Where do you get your ideas? - Architecture.

Just for my own personal benefit I've always wanted to design my own home. Since I'm an engineer it will be a bit of something Hi-Tech.

I've came up with several plans for the home before but none of which really met my full potential. I'm only going to do a 'realistic' design and later maybe get an architect to bring it into reality.

I've seen some designs on here and they're awesome. Do you guys just make it up as you go along? Look at other designs or something?

I'm truly limited by my imagination, would really like to get started on something great, so your hints and tips would be great!

Thanks.

All my designs come from my clients and client's architects. Even though I'm architecturally trained I don't and have no desires to design my own stuff.

To help inspire me with my rendering and lighting solutions I do spend a fortune on interior design, kitchen, bathroom etc etc magazines every month. probably 20-30 bucks a month. I also cut out phots from magazines I read which take my fancy and stick them over my office walls.

i get visions! well not really.. but sometimes something triggers in my brain and i can clearly visualize an atmosphere with the people, buildings, shape of the clouds, down to the imperfections of the sidewalk and a sense of whats going on there. Its difficult to explain - sort of looking through another set of eyes inside your brain. I used to try and model them out in max or draw or anything really but its really hard to do that because the more i look the more it fades away so best i can do is describe them and write it down in my secret diary of crazy. Later on when im in a situation where i sense that ive already "seen" what i could use here i just dig out my diary and it all comes back! Then i try to carve it out quick before it fades again :| I have a master plan in motion however to catch these tricky bastards for good though! Maybe one day i'll get to show them to others.

Well I've only been doing this for a fraction of the time a lot of you have been modelling, but I come from a drawing perspective. I used to draw nearly all day, everyday, and like the guy above me, I tend to just "see things" in my head, and try REALLY hard to interpret them onto a piece of paper. The same goes for my music production (except then, I HEAR things). I might just be sitting there with a cup of tea, with some crap on telly that I'm not even interested in, or burning some sensi, then suddenly I get hit with an idea.

I play a lot of games though too, and love movies and music, and those things seem to be a real inspiration booster to me. Right since I was old enough to draw something legible, I'd be watching some film, then as the end credits are rolling, my mind would be BUZZING with ideas, and its the same today. I've got a ton of character concepts (thats what I'm calling them now), which are just original characters in poses I've been drawing over the past few years (before I got into modelling), but I'm nowhere near skilled enough to model characters yet. For architecture I dont even really make designs. I just think back to movies like Blade Runner, Akira, Dark City, Ninja Scroll etc because I love futuristic and ancient Japanese architecture, then just sort of spontaneously model things out in Max with no real sense of direction or planning. Again, another good source of ideas for me, are all the pictures I've drawn since I was a kid. Even high detail doodles which I literally carpeted my school books in.

Inspiration is everywhere, sometimes it literally comes out of nowhere! Drown yourself in movies, books, games, music etc, or just take in your surroundings when your out and about. Ideas will come!
