What does this mean? (in rendering)
show user profile  nymphett
Hi guys,
I've been rendering a scene in 3Ds Max for over 3hours now. The scene itself is pretty complicated, with Vray mats/Vray sun, & with some high poly objects.

The view window is still blank, though the "rendering' box is still active, with the current task meter still running.

My question is, does the lack of 'rendering preview' mean that the image isn't rendering properly? Even though the "unloading geometry" is still running. Should I cancel the process & try again?

Note: I have no render warning/error.

Thnx

it says loading and unloading geometry?
i think that happens when you dont have enough RAM due to your high poly objects! so the rendering process becomes soo slow!

Hii
I'm sure it's not a RAM situtation. The workstation I'm using is for a rendering company :P

I've had this issue before... The scene continues to render but it doesn't look like anything is happening. Let it go, when 100% hits (or before) you'll see it. Sucks tho cause you can't see progress... I think it's just a bug

I'm thinking its a ram thing too. When scenes get poly / mapping heavy you'll get it doing this. You'll also get it when using displacement.

I'm not 100%, but I would say it does it when it needs to, don't think its a bug. I'm using a machine with 16 gig of ram and still get it with certain things. Seems to be calculation heavy things.

I highly doubt this is a memory issue.. This has to do with your settings. Be sure your using vray as your renderer. Also check to be sure your using compatible lighting and shadows. Also one huge problem a lot of people forget when new to Mentalray and Vray is when using global illumination you must encapsulate your scene as to bounce photons back into your scene. If you do not you will get never ending rendering and the render preview will remain black indefinitely.

Hope this helps, Best of luck!

when you see that msg, open task manager and check out your memory usage to make sure the problem comes from somewhere else :)

Thnx for the feedback, it's good to know I'm not alone in this.

Any idea how to fix this?

check to make sure your licensing is going through... If it is not going though it might hold on this for a little while..

I remember when this (or something similar) happened to me when I had some issues with ChoasGroups dongle (upgrading from 1.5 to 2.0 and needed a dongle upgrade or something)..

Have you upgraded recently? If so, I do believe you need some different stuff on your dongle license.

AFAIK Unloading Geometry occurs when there are proxy issues/ scene management... I'm pretty sure it is memory related. Try optimising your scene as much as possible. Render with few objects and keep adding to see what's causing the problem.

Also check your dynamic memory limits. It'll take a play, so if you're using a combination of mesh + proxy + displacement, ur gonna have to find a sweet spot value which will work for the scene in relation to the memory u have

I took your advice in rendering each object separately, it worked fine. Took less than 3mins each. But when I render a scene, this problem occurs.
