What am I looking at here?

So I've just been sent a whole bunch of Max files. The job... I don't actually know the specifics, it's either optimisation or retopo or whatever.

However, in one max file alone, I've got about 2000 objects that look a bit like this:

The black lines you see are its wireframe, at first glance I thought it was NURBS or something but the object is an edit mesh, and there's just no (visible) topology.

What am I dealing with here? CAD scans? Black magic?

I get this importing some CAD files. It imports them as a mesh, yet you get these odd representations. Add an Edit poly modifier and look at the mess it makes.

So you've had experience with this shite right? Any tips on easily turning these into something more normal? I'm pretty sure my job here is to optimise the holy hellfire out of these objects and get them running in unity.

Looks like what I get from people sending me Solidworks STEP files.
Any time I try to manipulate them they fall apart.
Probably only useful as blueprint type left, top, front reference views.

Yeah I've come to the realisation that I can't work directly with a lot of these meshes.

I tried to decline the job, told my boss it's not really a service we provide and he shouldn't tell the client we can do it... but you know how it is, when those dolla-dolla signs roll over their eyes.

So good news, I'm going to cry myself to sleep tonight. I mean there's only about 20,000 objects that I know of (so far).

Fucking titballs.

These are the ultimate pain in the ass to work with mate. I go through a lot of keyboards when I'm given a batch of these bastards.

If you have the original files, you can import them over and over at different resolutions and occasionally, one won't fuck up when you try to work with it.

If you've got 20,000, it would be better to get them exported to OBJ from the original files.

if there are any verts you can connect or edges it'll help allot with the topology twisting
i guess you could farm the meshes out to others (thinking odesk really)

@Nik, do you mean whoever has the original CAD stuff would need to export as obj? I tried exporting from Max and importing in order to force topology generation, but the results were puh-retty undesirable.

@K-tonne, yeah that's entirely possible... just not overly practical unfortunately. The image I posted is of just one object with an ungodly amount of verts. Then there's the 1,876 other objects left to go in just that one Max file.

Managed to get 2, possibly 3 other people on the job too. So we'll see how it goes.

what do the normals look like on one of these b-boys when u bring it in? or does any modifier jack up the model. 20k of these sounds like a nightmare

Dave, did you try to convert to Body Object and then to Editable Mesh/Poly?
You might have to convert to NURBS first, then to Body Object.
It's a wild guess but you might be lucky.

Attempting to turn one into Nurbs seems to break my Max, but that Body Object method might be okay. I hadn't even heard of Body Objects until now mind, what's the deal with those?

It leaves me with a lot less re-building, and for the one example I tried it on before my Max died it seemed to do a good job of generating topology.
