Webdesign For My New Personal Website
show user profile  mathias-soeholm
So there's been a couple of webdesign threads going on around here
And i've been working on some aswell, just started one for myself that i'd like to focus on in this thread :)

I recently did one for my college/school which should be used to a new community site..
Clicky

I'm pretty happy with the result of that one, so now i want to create one for my personal website, which will be mathias-s.dk. And i will proberbly put alot of work in it, so if you guys would give me some c and c on my way i'd be very thankfull.

Here's the one i just started on, only focused on the header by now.
Clicky

Cheers

I like your home page better then the campus life. I suppose the only reason would be your english slowly turns into german and I become confused.

German.. it's Danish!

But yeah, in denmark we like to use alot of english terms, and do also name alot of stuff english.
As example my college name is danish and is named GameITCollege, even though it's not really a college

The design looks pretty slick and simple. Nothing too overwhelming. My only beef would be the size. I've worked on some websites before, and when I've started with designs like yours (thin and down the center) people with large resolutions get upset. They don't enjoy going to a page that takes about 10% of their screen down the center with a huge amount of white-space on each side.

I'd say to design it to fit slightly without the usualy 1024x768 dimensions, and let it float still so a screen with higher resolution would have a floating center page, but not one that is tiny in comparison.

This will also provide you with a lot more room in which to put content/unclutter your things.

Oh, and one last thing. Make sure to put some sort of background or border to separate your two columns. It is important to show contrast between different content so the user isn't confused. As it stands, I feel those are two highly related topics since they're right next to each other, but one is an intro and another is discussing your latest work.

Some things you can do to fix this is:

Put backgrounds behind each or a line down the middle separating them
Place a header or text at the top of the column to overview the section like "Intro" and the other as "Latest Works". Just your current headers over the post aren't enough to explain what the user is looking at.
Switch the conventional "news post" type system where you have no overlying topic, but the newest post is at the top and oldest at the bottom. That way you can freely post whatever you want without having the user expecting some consistency. (Do this by bumping your "Latest work" post bellow or above the intro and have them span the entire page).

Sorry, this is a lot of text, it's hard to explain what I mean. Nice work though!

Got my webpage working now, if you want to try the game i made go to http://www.mathias-s.dk

It's quite easy, but make sure you read the "about" page. There's only 2 levels btw..

Currently experimenting with the size. I made it a bit bigger.
I'm working on a 1680*1050 display, so i don't really know how it fits on full HD..

I made two pages, so i'm able to test it. Anyone working on something else then 1680*1050, tell me what you think.

original size http://www.mathias-s.dk/test

just a bit bigger http://www.mathias-s.dk/test2

Cool, what resolution is that? :)

Oh, and if you didn't all ready guess, the white area for content will go all the way down to the bottom of the window :)

Excellent job with adding headers and contrast in the sections. Looks much cleaner now and easy for the eyes to follow. Also, I support the second one as well for it's size. Looks a lot more spacious/less cluttered and fits much nicer on my screen (1024x768, I know it's small but it's a laptop!).

Looks great! Keep the updates coming. Hope you get a working site up soon.

Thanks mate

I'm really happy that you like the size on the relatively small resolution, because so far i've only seen it myself on a 1680 x 1050 display and a full hd display.

I'm getting a new monitor soon :D, 2048 x 1152 it is. I hope it looks okay, on such high resolution.

Getting functionality in place will definitely be a challenge as i haven't really coded any websites before.

Cheers, and thanks your comments :)

Long time no progress..
Never got time to do functionality.

I made a minimalistic temporary frontpage on my website:
http://www.mathias-s.dk

Will see if i'll ever get the planned site running ;)
