War of the Worlds Tripod - Jeff Wayne Style
show user profile  mrgrotey
Heres my next model ive been working on over the last couple of days..

The Martian Fighting Machine from War of the Worlds (Jeff Wayne Musical Version), I think this is the coolest version, although, technically the least accurate compared to H.G.Wells' descriptions.

Im going to rig it up and do a little walk about animation too but thats after the texturing. im going for a more battle scarred look as they only ever show then being in immaculate condition.

let me know what you think :)

[edit] oh and by the way, i know the legs need to be longer but im still using ref images which shortened them to save space, so i will be lengthening them after i get the 'feet' on them

Very cool. Looking forward to seeing the animation for sure! Keep it up man! It's also nice to see a robot thing that doesn't look like your stereotypical big mech.

Be careful, I've seen people try to make things from movies and it ends up being a complete recreation of a scene. Very nice work though. Haven't seen that version before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

looks very cool. now i feel like seeing the movie again. post wire versions of your pic, i'd like to see'em :)

make the bottom of it charred a bit, like smoked out black. as if someone tossed a molotov cocktail at it from the ground.

Nice...animating a three legged walk cycle would a bit of a trick I imagine, I look forward to seeing what you reckon about it.

ross: yup sure is, i sick of seeing htose mech all the time, ive stayed well away from modelling one (although saying that the one on Graysons site rocks!) Cheers mate.

ea6b607: Im well aware of that, done it myself once or twice, but this isnt actually in a film (soon to be though later this year hopefully) its just a visulisation of the ones in the musical version of the book, so the scope is quite broad with what to do with it.

Fridgeeeeee: Thanks man, the musical version is such a classic

Red: Damn forgot to render wires, will do on next update, yeah im going to go for a slightly battle scarred and dirty look (that'll test out my not-so-good texturing sklls :), cheers mate

markoid, its pretty tricky actually, i tried it out before on a low poly version and its...well...tricky. we'll see :)

Update: modelling virtually done now, maybe a few things to add here and there

i'm not usually one to focus on the negative when people post stuff up for critique but i guess this time it's because i can see you might be starting to get into some bad habits : /

i think you need to step back and look at polishing up the mesh rather than rushing through to the final stages. i can see mesh errors and lumpies on the larger cylindrical sections on the legs. on the 'eye' area it looks like you're relying too much on meshsmooth for the forms and i can see classic 'loose blends' between rounded corners.

also there's quite a few things that are off from the refs - top of the 'knees' are much more rounded and egg shaped, same for those cylindrical bits on the main legs - the lower one is a tear drop shape. the cable by the knee lacks real weight and overall the form of the main body looks a little off (flatter, stubbier front & flatter, wider base, etc.)

still, i know you're usually spot on with your refs so perhaps i'm jumping on things specific to the ref you posted rather than any others you may be using...

and i'm only being harsh because i know you're capable of making this into another great addition to your portfolio. just slow down a little, focus on any areas you might be being 'lazy' over and work on the fancy bits later : )

keep at it

poopy: its funny, thats what actually got me into making it :) he can have it too, (for the right money :p )

peet: I hate you, you must realise i just post this stuff for praise, isnt this an ass kiss website? hehe, nah seriously i appreciate the crits, im always after them and dont always get them. I can confirm that yes i am relying oa little on meshsmooth for the eyes as ive had a big problem in doing them since the start, ive tried it a few times and dont ever get the result im after but dont worry its one of those thing that is stuck in my head that i need to improve as i never like leaving things that i know i can improve with a little more work.
i can also confirm that the lumpy looking cylindrical legs are simply lighting optical illusions, the legs were worked on for quite a while making htem nice an clean and ive done a skylight render to prove to myself they are good but thanks for pointing it out

Im not actually going by that sketch for my refs i have proper font side and top drawings for the tripod and they do vary a little to that drawing (sorry should have posted themup before.

heres everything...

comeon there must be more to crit?...

Thansk Vishesh, jeez i keep forgetting the wireframe shots, i promise to do them on my next update or I'll eat my fronat.

small update, i completely remodelled the eyes and the frame around the eyes, i hated the originals since i did them and they had to go. made a funky eye shader to which im rather pleased with :)

Hello,

Nice modeling, and yes texturing is real a pain :S
I think this dude won't have that much of trouble texturing. You never know :P

In the last reference post pictures, I think there are two boxes behind the eyes. Are they for the legs. I think they are not there in the model. :S Sorry if I missed something.

Im curious as to the 'boxes' you refer to inxa? i can only think you mean either the tail part or the holes where the legs go into, can you explain a bit clearer?

heres a comparison between them both and also the promised wire render
