Wacom Inkling
show user profile  Setherial
Hey Guys

I'm about to order the Wacom Inkling. Does anyone have one or tested one? thoughs?
Looks like a useful toy to me. I like sketching with ballpoint and this way I can store it all, whereever (read at work) and on whatever (read everything resembling paper near to me) I sketch.
Maybe it'll motivate me to get back into digital art, start using my cintiq for something more then just an expensive screen.
Ever since I started painting with traditional media I just lost interest in digital painting. Now when I try anything on the cintiq it feels like a chore.
I think if I can just sketch it on paper so I don't have to start from scratch on the computer it 'll be a less daunting task. I would like to get into character and creature design, comic book stuff and shit instead of sticking to portraits. broaden my range of skills.
The inkling seems like the perfect tool to blend the transition between traditional and digital. Bringing ideas to the computer and work them out. Getting just the line and not all the other artifacts and smudges a scanner or a camera picks up that you then have to clean up.

cheers

David

Would be interesting to see YOUR experiences with it if you get one as I don't know anyone that has yet :)

without a wacom tablet of some kind to continue the work digitally it doesn't seem that useful. I see it as an extension of the wacom tablet.

yes exactly my point :).. that is if u dont want to stop at skatching.. and wanna go on with the painting, which by the way is pretty awesome.
photoshop has all sort of brushes that work great with the tablets pen, some of which sense it`s tilt.. plus, the pen`s different tips feel really natural on the tablets surface.. u will love this 2 if by any chance u get them

Yeah I'm pretty comfortable using photoshop, I've been using it longer then any other program that I can recall.

I'm going to try PostworkShop. Just downloaded the demo. Looks promising. I'm also going to give Artrage another go. I want an application that can mix/blend colors, I mis that in photoshop.

He doesn't have one, I just talked to him. He's waiting for one apparently though.

Once I have mine I'll post some results.

My Inkling arrived. I had time for only a brief test so far. Here is a mini review:

- Nice practical case that contains everything, pen, scanner, usb connection, integrated battery loader (charge while connected to pc), the software (Windows and MacOS), the manual in pdf

- Easy to install, unboxing and getting started can be done in a few minutes without reading the manual, it's all very simple. I did check the manual to see where to put the small battery that at first I didn't notice was included. Without it the pen doesn't work while the scanner works without the need of inserting a battery.

- Pen feels great and the ballpoint is just the way I like it.

- The file apparently stores a time information and you can see yourself draw as a movie of the entire drawing which is cute. the software exports to photoshop among other things that I did not check.

- the recorded drawing was identical to what I sketched in terms of position and scale but not in terms of lineweight which brings me to the only downside I noticed: no pen pressure!!! This is actually a huge deal to me. When draing with ballpoint I like to search for form by making very light lines and adding more line weight once I found the form I'm after. In the resulting image however every line is drawn at 100% pressure.
It willl force me to adjust my approach to drawing.

still it's a nice toy and I'm eager to start using it on a daily basis.
