Maxunderground news unavailable

This is not a 'vs' question, but would vray or mental ray be inherently faster for interior renders?

Hi Guys,

As above really.

i have worked on a scene of a breakfast room off a kitchen illuminated using MR with daylight system and photographic exposure controls, but even rendering at Rebus the renders at 2800 x 2100 are taking hours and hours. I'm using settings taught on an Escape Studios course, but this seems absolutely crazy to me.

I'm wondering if MR needs the settings to be so high to get anywhere near photoreal that it kills the render times, and would vray do things more quickly due to it being more advanced?

I can't keep on pulling all nighters every time I have an interior to do if this is an MR issue.

Has anyone got any thoughts at all?

Try Corona if you can. It's free and very fast. Great for interiors.

A photo real 2800 pixel interior in vray would averagely take me around 1 hour. 1-2 at most.

Cheers Strat - that's what I am after really.

I think that there is something wrong with what was taught on the course if I'm honest: I have used all my notes, and the guy teaching it says that he expects decent renders to take up to 5-6 hours each which I think is crazy.

Do you have a particularly high powered machine mate? I know there are issues as even on Rebus the renders each took upwards of 5hrs!!

I do to be honest. What kind of spec (no. of cores) do you have?

A photo real image on a quad core is a 3-4 hour render tops at that res maybe. The key is a good working knowledge of vray and a damn good understanding of optimisation. No other answer for it.

I've got 48 render buckets on my main render engine btw :)

It's going to depend on the scene too. Night time interiors with lots of light sources are going to kill the render times. Same with industrial type materials with glossiness maps. But yeah, give Corona a go, I bet it will surprise you.

How's that work then strat? Is that a network setup?

I'm just starting to get to grips with vray properly and I've got a quad core machine. I'm playing with a scene at the moment which will take about 5hrs to render with 8 buckets. It's well optimised - I've been learning a lot from Grant Warwick's subscription programme, and I'm starting to think that I either need to farm out jobs to rebus, or get a little farm of my own. :(

Nah, a single pc with 24 cores hypa threaded in vray.

Making an image photo real isn't really a processing event, more a process in your artistry. Processing slow downs usually come in the form of trying to get yourself a clean grain free image. Usually where high samples and AA are involved, made harder when, as mentioned, glossy materials and numerous area lights are used in a scene.
But again, theres ways and means to help overcome these issues too.

I've only got a simple i5 setup ( I can't remember the exact spec ) with around 8GB RAM but I will get the exact specs later.

I'll also post my render settings to show what's going on - hopefully we can get to the bottom of what's going on.

Thanks again chaps.

The spec of my machine is pretty basic:

Intel i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz

Perhaps that explains why the renders take so long on my machine, but surely not on a render farm?

Probably shouldn't be taking huge amounts of time on a farm, but your PC spec is not great, it's true.
Mentalray's GI system is horrid in my opinion - vray does outshine the old fashioned photon mapping and final gather. Light cache and irradiance map a much better. Once the GI is calculated though, the actual scene rendering is probably not THAT different. Vray has adaptive subdivision, so in areas with minimal glossy reflection/area lights etc, it renders rough and quick, and adds samples where the values are really needed. Adaptive DMC is a bit mind bending to learn though, and not intuitive. I believe mentalray still just has the min 1, max 64 style sampling though, right?

Maybe post a pic so we can get an idea where the slowdown is occurring?
