vray render elements
show user profile  Boing
if i wanted to generate say a specular element, is there a way of saving the render and the specular automatically in a single render command. i know i can render to a VFB and save them out seperatley but using a render farm it would be easier if i could automate it.

if you set your render settings to render to a file and save as an image (like jpg, tif etc), the element will automatically be saved with the same name and extention to the same destination.

but surely if i send a render with an element as a single job it will save them both with the same name and one will overwrite the other?

that would be rediculous... vray puts in a "_RENDERELEMENTNAME" to the files being saved out when writting them to the harddrive.

ie

myproject_rgb_0000.jpg
myproject_diffuse_0000.jpg
etc etc

or you can be like the cool kids on the block and save to exr and have your render elements integrated into one render file. at least that's what you should be doing, esp since exr is the only format to stick to a lwf.

ok i've beeen fiddling with this but if i save the render as a jpeg with elements it'll save the jpeg and one .imsq file no matter how many elements were added. if i save as an .exr file there are no otehr layers in photoshop other than the image.

confused now, i don't doubt i'm missing something dumb but i can't see it myself.

ok, i've just resent the same job without changing anything and suddenly a seperate imsq and exr file is saved for every element.

is there a box to tick that i may have hit by accident? this seems very random.

i notice when i use the vray frame buffer it'll save a single file, when i use max's frame buffer it'll save separate ones.

yup, that's the difference; the vfb can load all elements at the same time...

in order for you to view them in ps, you need some tool for it; google it up.
