Vray Product render
show user profile  geoffneck
I'm trying to render a simple clean white background/groundplane render of a product with soft shadow from the top.

What I'm trying to do is render the product on its own, then the shadow under the product so I can comp them to make the shadow darker/lighter.

I'm using Vray2.0 and have tried elements, mtlwrapper to no avail and its driving me mad. Is there a simple explanation out there as what to do?

to render the shadow only.
use a matte/shadow material for the floor. (in vray properties i think you have to check affect shadows or alpha or both)
select your objet>object properties> invisible to camera

As for rendering the object just unhide it from the camera.

Just checked a file tih those characteristics, to render the shadow only, select you object and do as I told you earlier, object properties and invisible to camera.
then select your floor object and in vray properties checl matte object, alpha contribution to -1.0 and check shadows and affect alpha in direct light tab.

background layer: white blank background.

shadow layer: product object set to invisible to camera and ground object with vray object properties set to matte object with -1 alpha contribution and direct light shadows and affect alpha checked on.

product layer: ground object set to invisible to camera.

ideally, comp it in a real comping program like nuke but regardless you layer them one over the other. tada.

too late!

Say thanks to him

Right, I've managed to get good results and separate renders... the issue I now have is when I place the product over the shadow in comp, it has a slight white outline where it hits the shadow...

I presume I need to feather the edges and blend layers but am struggling to get a good result. Any good fixes for this? I'm using AE, or can use Premiere.

Also ideally like bolt was saying, max would have a pass system too to make workflow un-shit (maybe the new one isnt too dodgy)

render layers from maya would be perfect.

geo: render on black only.

problem is, if I render on black, I will get a black outline around the product. The product sits on a white background with shadow on the groundplane...

edit>> OK, well I rendered out the shadow plane with the product set to occlude in the Vray Property settings... this let me layer the product over the shadow layer in AE... I still had the white outline, so i put the product layer on multiply and incrased its scale to 100.3% whiich allowed the white edge to blend over the shadow...

Crux of it is that this has produced something I was after in a roundabout way... thanks above for help.

as Nuke?

this is the part where i usually say, none.

but in realistic terms; fusion is out there. although in my opinion not as good or easy to use as nuke and there's always shake (but i'm pretty sure it's no longer being developed).

aside from those are the "free" ones you get with maya and max... that being toxic and composite respectively.

personally, everything outside of nuke is shit. the only reason for that being that nuke was purpose built by professionals in pipeline situations. it just fucking works the way it's meant to work.

Just seen the cost of Nuke £3K...

I'm sure its worth it, but I cant justify that at the moment... I'll take a look at the trail and look at some other options.

Many thanks for the info...
