Vray plane just won't fuck off

Hey, I was setting up an hdri scene and put a vray plane in it (with alpha -1.0 in vray properties to catch shadows). But it wasn't working. So I deleted it and did a test render... it was still appearing in the render.

Double checked (pressed H), definitely no vray plane in my scene.

Imported to a new scene... still there in the render (but 100% not in the scene. And, no, it's not hidden).

And the really weird thing is if I DON'T use a Vray camera it disappears.

So first question: Obviously, how do I get it to fuck off?

Second question: Once it's fucked off, how do I set it up properly so that it's invisible but only catches the shadows (note: I'm positive I've done it correctly but it's just not behaving correctly. Need to double-check).

I can't reproduce, but your post title deserves an award :D

Only thing I can think of if is you have clipping active on the camera ? Not sure if any other camera settings would give the illusion of a plane or effect the render.

re: shadows...basically set it up as a matte object via vray params...

No clipping, FX. The horizon was fine, just the ground behind my model was clipped.

@ Nik, that means someone's talking about you, or so I heard.

LOL. I love that show. Didn't remember that scene.

P.S. Did a test with the vray properties set properly (not alpha -1.0). Bam. I owe you another beer FX. Now just get me god damn a job in the UK so I can leave Malaysia and we'll meet up.

That sucks.

But doesn't suck as much as me thinking it was working because I did a region render of the ground and could actually see it as opposed to it being pure black). It's still gone full retard on me (was wondering why the car was overblown but the background was dark for the region renders).

I'm using Max 2014, so I leave the environment to 1.0. Just checked the gamma and LUT tab and saw it wasn't checked. I've ticked it now but there is zero difference.

But that's not the problem, the problem is that the vray plane is taking up 4/5 of the screen, creating a dark "patch" (dunno what you call it).

Did a full set of tests. Turns out I was mistaken. It's vray dome light that's causing the darkness.

So... I shouldn't use it?

This is the first time I've come across this issue.

[edit] alright, so how do I get vray dome to NOT affect the background?
