Do you have Vray Exposure Control active ?

Are you using a skylight ?

What do you see in your viewport ?

Is the pope a catholic ?

Do bears shit in the woods ?

I can't read the text on that and your link leads to nothing.

...and it looks like your using a dome light, afaik it needs to be a skylight to work.

Ok, I've just tried this again, it *seems* Vray dome doesn't work with HDRI in the view-ports, I say *seems* because I don't read manuals ;).

...anyway... resisting the urge to type over convoluted techno nerd babble, I'll do a step by step.

I'm using Nitrous D3D 9 in the viewports, in Max 2014, viewport set to Realistic.

1. Create a skylight, NOT a vray light, a Standard skylight.

2. Apply a VrayHDRI to it's map slot.

3. Open up environment and effects, and drag an instance to the environment slot, while your there activate Vray Exposure Control.

4. Open up the Viewport Configuration and tell it to use Environment Background..

5. Double check your using scene lights in the viewport config :

That's pretty much it, you should have HDRI lighting and shadows in your viewport, if you've done all the above and the view-ports still dark, make sure you don't have "Skylights as Ambient" checked.

Now just tweak your exposure control settings until your happy, as your using only one instance of the HDRI, you can rotate it and all will follow.

btw, Power Preview gives you real-time editing in the viewports, it's less annoying than the viewport config ;)

Something else I noticed if shadows are your issue, when I scale the plane the bipeds are standing on it seems to affect the shadows, shadows are reduced the bigger the plane gets.

Not sure if this is a Nitrous issue, user error, or I'm missing a parameter.
