[VRay] No bumpmap effect visible in Indirect Illumination areas
show user profile  Nanne
I'm starting to noticing a trend when rendering interiors with VRay, the bump map effect on the floor is only visible where the direct light hits it, as soon as the direct ligth fades over to just indirect light the floor looks really flat. I've seen renderings where you can still see the bump in these areas, and even photographs.
I'm using IR + LC and I read this in the manual:

"The light cache does not work very well with bump maps; use the irradiance map or brute force GI if you want to achieve better results with bump maps."

Do you have any tips on how to work around this? What engines do you usually use? IR + BF?
Cheers!

Do your floors have some reflectivity? Even blurred/matte reflections should help and most surfaces should have some level of reflectivity and this should help reveal the bump a little.

Yes, quite a lot of reflectivity actually and Fresnel-effect on, using IOR ranging from 1.6 to like 4 or 7, but it doesn't really help. Well it works perfect in the direct illumination as I said, there the bump is almost too intensive.

Hmm. Not too sure then. Have you tried rendering a small section with Brute force to see if there is a big difference? Maybe you could post an image?

interesting!

If you can't figure it out, post up on the chaosgroup forum, there's alot of architecture rendering guys there who might be able to give you some help. Or it may be a bug :)

Me personally, I like brute force primary, and lightcache secondary. But I don't really do a whole lot of interior renders.

I will do some test renderings when I get the chance :)
