Here's the volumetric Nebula setup...

It's set to render frames 0-5.
Render them out to some place on your hard drive.

In the skybox material, dig around on each one of the listed textures and find where you rendered them out. If anyone has problems with it, reply here.

Thanks Hanzz, will give it a look, got a holiday coming up, could make a cool space scene.

Glad to offer it! The best settings to change in order to get variations are:

Noise Parameters: "Phase" and "Width". The "Phase" value really gives different 'shuffling's of the clouds, but will allow the rest of the settings to stay constant. Width takes the clouds from a hazy thick look down to a thin 'membranous' kind of look. Changes to the "Center" value might offer interesting results too.

Then in the Primary and secondary perturbation settings: "Phase" and "Size". "Phase" changes will give nice secondary 'shuffling' of the smaller cloud details. "Size" will quickly change the overall scale of the perturbation effect. Increased "Freq." values for these tend to overly crush details together, but it has some merit in a limited range.

Here are a few skybox renders, as the camera would see if looking in one direction. One is rendered at 1280x720 from six 512x512 renders. Another is from 1024x1024 renders. A couple are from 256x256. The funnything is, it's nearly impossible to tell which is which.

My setup, or something else?

It's always interesting to find new approaches for things in max. This effect is a great basis for EVE online-esque looking nebulae, or any space game really. And since it's a pain in the butt to try and hand paint 6 textures, this is handling the hardest part in one go. Combined with a star background, distant nebulae sweeteners, a sprinkling of closer stars, and one or more hero stars nearby, the results can be really strong.

I just switched the render to vray, and hit render and it renders like 30 seconds a frame

Oh wow! What resolution? I know that it's taking my 6 year old computer a bit to even render scanline at 512x512. Which sucks, because as much as I love cosmic/astronomical stuff, I could sit here for hours experimenting.

And you're looking through Camera 1 and it still renders that fast? That's pretty amazing. Also check to see if the Perturbation settings are "On" in the shader that's applied to the projector light. If it's not, (I don't remember if it is or isn't) then it renders pretty fast even on my computer.

Here's a recent skybox setup. It was six 512x512 renders for the box, and the video render is 640x360. I'm sick of how blurtacular youtube compresses my videos into, so here's a dropbox link...

Here's a pic from the video...this one has a bit of a different feel to it...

Hey there, yeah, the electric shader can be found on maxplugins.de Make sure you get the version for your release of max. It's a very sophisticated shader, the best I've found for max so far.

Yeah, just change settings and render frames 0-5 from Camera1's viewpoint.

Just make sure to make a copy if you find a setting you like, and I've left a ton of different ones there. The only flaw in the whole thing is the fact that the perturbation settings won't "ctrl-Z" so if you don't either write them down (as well as the other settings) they're lost forever after a few clicks.

Here's a link to another panning video of a nebula. This one turned out nice.

A screenshot (the six textures are only 512x512)

Thanks! Later on I need to create a space environment and this could sure be used as a base for some elements.
