vat dispute
show user profile  buck rogers
i gave a written quote of £4000 inc VAT to a customer ( im stupid cos im not VAT registererd)
After this the customer then said he'l do a lot of the work to lessen the price, so we VERBALLY agreed £650 to be taken off of original quote.(nothing in writing to confirm this)
The overall price of the job was £3350
I accepted stage payments and clearly stated in my INVOICE that i had accepted these, and was paid the full amount in total of £3350, but i had not written anything at all about including tax

both the customer and myself are on good terms still and iv offered him full amount back but i want to know my rights on this one

Interesting first post.

If you made less than £79,000 in a year, you are not liable for VAT.

Read this or give these people a ring to know for sure.

Tax and vat are your responsibility alone. You MUST pay tax whatever, but you aren't liable for vat unless as Nik says.

You charge the client X amount. You then pay tax out of this. You dont charge tax to your client as an extra. Not his responsibility. .

so what exactly is your question or concern?

Let him word the bill how he wants. He can phrase things for his own ledgers in his own way he wishes. Likewise, you charge him an amount and get paid that amount. I too have had clients wonder about my VAT bills. I dont qualify for it so i just tell them, the bill is X amount. Word it on your side how you wish. Just say you aint VAT registered.
