UVW Unwrap really necessary?
show user profile  AONgamers
Well I was working in a Design, and I know it that every time I was trying to paint a zone, different zones were affected subsequently... I really did it fast, so the UVW maps were like... UVW unrap material, then select the vertexes, and going to tools

dang dude, I'm tryin to figure out your question too.

Are you painting a 3D model inside of 3D Max? Viewport canvas? Sounds like you might be having some symmetry issues but yeah...not sure...

well what I did is this:

when I finished Modeling, I go to UVW Unrap material in 3Ds Max.

I open edit>selected all vertex>tools>pack UV...>then closed and then collapsed.

I didn't take anytime to relocate and put the UVW in a position, but I didn't though that it will affect it while I will try to paint it? or it did not?

I'm having issues because I exported to Mudbox to paint it there, and every time I try to paint for example the wheel, another part is painted too. Idk what else to do :/

painting would most likely use the UV's- so if some were overlapping more than one area would be painted at the same time.
finish modelling, map then paint

[edit] just saw your reply- painting in mudbox will use the uv's- manually set the uv's out- far better than auto pack
these are elements yes? more than likely overlapping uv's

so I have to the the UVW again? all of them and move them manually so they don't overlap?...

Pictures would help.

Show us what your current unwrap is. And try explaining things with a little more coherence. If you did an auto-pack then I honestly don't think overlapping UV's are the cause. UNLESS you've done something wrong, somewhere.

Show us what you're doing, because... no offence, you're pretty terrible at wording it!

Overlapping UV's is the cause because he didn't unwrap shit, just auto-pack which isn't helping if you haven't unwrapped your model.
So yes you need to do the UVW thing again, but this time, unwrap stuff.

I apologize. here is a succesive pictures of what I did.

1. Finished Model.

2. Inserting the UVW unrap.

3. Edit.

4.selected the vertexes, tools and selecting the pack UV.

5. Click ok and close it.

6. Collapsed.

7. Do the same for the rest.
8.try to painting the wheel in black in Mudbox after exporting, and half of the cannon have been painted in black also..

UVW Unwrapping is a process where you actually unfold your 3D geometry to 2D image space. It is more than push button 1, 2, 3. It takes some time to learn and practice to get it right, just like modeling.

Also the green panels have some wonky geometry, did you create them with booleans?

Booleans Tip: Booleans are evil.

Yes, booleans can be useful when applied correctly and I hear good things about pro boolean, but I'd advise all beggining modelers to stay away from them

A bit outdated, but the basic principle is here: http://www.waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html
(tip: don't use box, cylinder etc as a separate modifier, those tools have since been incorporated with the unwrap modifier)

jStins is there any way to do a fast map to be able to paint on it as faster as possible? cause If I have to do a map from each piece.. can take me hours...

by the way, whats.... Boolean?...

thank you horizon, I will take a look!.
