UVW Mapping rotation
show user profile  zeefusion
Hopefully some one can explain this to me as I am confused. Perhaps I am reading too much into this but I must know :p

First I create a box which is length 1200 x width 300 x height 300

Next I add a texture and UVW map in the Default Z alignment. The length, width and height match up to the box.

On the top the grain goes the correct way but on the side it doesn't. So I need to change the the alignment to X.

This causes the UVW map gizmo to not fit correctly and for it to now be correct on the side but not on the top. So I need to adjust the Length to be 300, width to be 300 and the height to now be 1200.

The resulting dimensions in the UVW map now don't match the dimensions of the box. Why did I have to rotate the UVW gizmo? Why doesn't the grain go in the same direction for the top and side initially?

Think of your image being put onto each square of the box as if the uvmap was unfolded into the old net templates you did as a kid at school Not all edges can match an image that only goes one way

Max doesnt know what the picture is or the model, and therefore cant rotate it to suit the model. Its physically impossiible to match every edge to eachother

In the image below you started with the top image, where edges 2 & 2 dont match. But by rotating and resizing the gizmo you came out with the bottom image where edge 2 does match.

Max isnt intelligent. It leaves that to you.

Ah OK, so by changing the alignment you are effectively changing the way the net is laid out? So Z alignment is your first image and X alignment is your second?

I understand the whole net template, I just wondered why at first 2 and 2 don't match up. I guess its just the default way in which Max unwraps a box?

Thanks for the images its makes it very clear :)
