UV Unwrap or UV Wrap Problem?

I have beginning knowledge and working in Max 6. Two images attached below. When I render it looks correct (with exception of some obvious work I need to do in UV Unwrap), but texture does not wrap correctly in my perspective window (textures rendered in viewport.) This "patchwork" of textures, some turned varying degrees, also shows in my model export to .j3d.

Have you tried map scaler?

Map Scaler gives me no visual change in either the working window or the trnder window. This does not seem logical. Why would the render window show something different?

Remember, I am somewhat of a beginner.

All I want is for one texture to cover entire surface, not to tile even once. If this was a plane with one segment, it works fine, but anything with more than one face will get tiled like this. I must be overlooking something simple. I really have not worked a lot in UV Unwrap or UV Wrap. Is there something there I should be doing?

for this shape I would just add a spherical map to the stones, that should get you a good enough unwrap. You don't need really to unwrap it. It looks as if the viewport is showing the texture aplied to each face of your shape (stone) try again and just add a spherical map to the modifer. Don't actually add a unwrap.
