Using HDRI
show user profile  Darq2013
Which is the best way to achieve those bright & crisp reflections on glossy objects using HDRI files?

Where should I put my HDRI file? In the reflection slot? Apply to a dome all over my scene? Need those files any special treatment before using it in 3dsMax? Hope I make myself a bit more clear...

You can use it as an independent reflection map in the material or you can use it in the environment slot. Which you do depends on what you are trying to achieve.

When you choose an HDR file, you can specify it's exposure/brightness/power.

You generally don't need to "apply it to a dome over the scene".

Listen to Bolts. He da man.

I think an employee at that well known, misunderstood, global giant of a corporation: Google, just lost the will to live.

You are saying: Google it, then talk to the people who knows that specific subject and works with the same program. Well.... ok!

stick it in the environment background, dont forget to pick the right mapping option. Also prepare to be disappointed since hdris don't behave in a photometrically correct way, at least in MR.

If you are using 3ds Max 2014, you might want to use the new IBL feature.
