| GOOD useable royalty free music ? |
Zman |
For years, We've been using shockwave-sound.com as our main source for music for projects. It has OK tracks for fairly cheap and easy to understand license terms.
I've lately came to realize that it has too much garbage there and finding suitable tracks there either take too long or there are just non to be found ...
I'll give an example of the sort of tracks I am looking for -
http://www.youtube.com/v/EX_m27UVjVQ
If i'll try to break down and explain the characteristics of why this music is good for what I need :
- the music is powerfull / strong / dramatic / not boring - The music builds up well, staring with a "calm" yet misteriuse tone and climbing up to several climexes.
I've looked through several stock music websites and most of them didnt have many GOOD usable tunes like the 1 in my example, and the ones that came close to it were either very expansive or had very limiting licensing conditions.
Anyone knows some GOOD stock sites with good simple license conditions ? Or even more specificly, Good specific tunes like the one in my example that can be purchased easily ?

I can offer you one of my songs for a project if you like. But the all have vocals on them.
I have one as you describe called Razorblade.
You can either download if from my bands website or I can mail it to you so you can judge for yourself.
http://unitygain.dk - go to teh download menu to get the entire album. You can use any song you like but I suggest the song Razorblade.
Let me know and we can figure out a free deal.

I've found plenty of usable music on stock sites like istock, vimeo has one now which I've not looked at..
But realistically as artists in an industry that often has trouble asserting our worth, we shouldn't expect to find masses of CHEAP and GOOD music, just as clients can't expect CHEAP and GOOD 3D.

pil - thanks but its not quite what we need for our productions :)
Reeves - I'm not looking for a debate on the issue as I was hoping to get some good specific suggestions on this thread, but about what you said -
of course if someone contacts me for a freelance project, he cant expect to get a cheap price for good results from me BUT if he is looking to buy a model I made from a STOCK website (turbosquid for example), then yes, he can find very good results and at a cheap price and also have a full license to use it on any media on any country and for any duration he would like ...
I would very much like so SPECIFIC suggestions if anyone has to give ! thanks :)

Yeah, I got hundreds of tracks. Here's a sample of a couple of them.
P.S. They're all free.

loads of stuff out there if you search around.
example : http://freemusicarchive.org/curator/creative_commons
obviously quality varies so you need to put some time into looking for what you need.
not actually sure what you're after. you ask for royalty free, then you talk about purchasing (a license). if you're paying, your options are obviously wider than just the free stuff.

I think you are confusing "Royalty free" with "free" ... Royalty free refers to the right to use copyrighted material or intellectual property without the need to pay royalties for each use or per volume sold.

not confusing. clarifying. you basically want to pay a one off license fee to use the piece in one world wide distributed augmented work (as a backing track) with no follow on royalties of any kind.
as to which license fits that, no idea. I'd start at http://ascap.com if you want something commercial & work out from there.
basically, where's the turbosquid of the music world ?
(don't know either but also interested)

Hi might not be what you need but I always use http://www.purple-planet.com/ for my music and
http://www.freesound.org for my sound effects. Not sure what the royalty situation is for either of them, I only use it for my own entertainment so I don't think it affects me. Steve

I use http://www.uniquetracks.com for a lot of dramatic/action stuff though not sure if they have what you need. For a whole cd its usually in the $99-$130 range or around $40 per track.
http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/ has some stuff but its kinda that cheesy 80s-90s sound to it.
Most sites have expanded searches for the "mood" of the music which may help.
