USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0 (external hard-drives)
show user profile  LionDebt
Hey, I'm in the market for an external hard-drive.

Option 1 -http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204506
USB 2.0 (interface transfer rate of 480Mbps)
Capacity of 2 TB
Pros: A lot bigger (capacity wise)
Cons: A lot less portable

Option 2 -http://www.ebuyer.com/product/219522
USB 3.0 (interface transfer rate of 5.0Gbps)
Capacity of 1 TB
Pros: Looks a lot smaller (can't find actual dimensions anywhere though)
Cons: Is 1TB really enough?

Here is the stumper. Price-wise, they are in the similar region of £60 to £70. My upper limit is £80.

I basically intend to use it as extra storage space. Music, films, 3d tutorials, files in general etc. The portability is a plus but it comes at the cost of a loss of space.

Just want your two cents on this before I click 'add to basket'

usb 2.0 wont bottleneck the transfer speed if thats what ur asking coz realistically a 10k hdd will average around 40mb/s while usb2 is good for up to 60 so the actual speed will depend on the hdd itself

i myself got a 3.5" sata 2 -> usb 2 enclosure(cost around 15€) which along with a 2tb drive would come to around 80€ (70ish pounds?) for when i need the portability but then again i usually keep my drives in my computer

Cheers - Yeah I've gone for the USB2 in the end. The portability is just a bonus, I won't be moving files back and forth from my computer to the HDD constantly.
