USB2 ports???
show user profile  STRAT
hi guys, simples question....

most times i plug an external storage drive in any of my usb ports the message pops up saying to use USB2 port for much faster speeds.

fine. but where are my usb2 ports? nothing is colour coded or specified anywhere

i've got 5 ports i can physically see, and each one gives the same message. my machine is around 1.5 years old. surely some must be usb2?

simply return your machine to stabmeister unincorporated for a motherboard & processor upgrade.

your box (with as many x's at the end as you like) with be upgraded to USB 3.

that's one better than usb 2.

you will also receive a t-shirt, printed with :

"how many usb 3 ports haz u got ?"

price on application + fees + shipping.

please state the colour you want your usb 3 ports to be when you place the order.

alternatively, look at the instruction manual that came with your motherboard or find a copy online.

USB 3 is 10x faster than USB 2 & about fifty bazillion times faster than USB 1.

If you have the documentation for your motherboard or able to look up your specific motherboard you could find out that way. Additionally, depending on the case, different motherboards support different USB headers for running to the front of the case ( in addition to the built in Ports at the back ). Not sure if there`s any diagnostic/scanning software that`ll tell you which ports are which. It`d think if it`s less than a couple of years old they`d all be USB 2 to be honest..

I bought a new motherboard specifically for USB3... luckily all USB3 ports have a blue strip to identify them. Didn't realise they were backwards compatible with USB2, so had my keyboard and mouse plugged into the blue ports, spent 10 minutes trying to find them for my external HD... doh

Chances are all your ports are USB2.

Its probably a driver incompatibility forcing the device to sub 2.0 speeds or you got something turned off in bios or windows is just full of it. What kind of speed are you getting? The 1.5 MB/s limit of 1.1 would be quite noticeable, if you get anything faster then windows is just full of shit.

I get this from time to time, even though I know all my ports are USB2, I find screaming obscenities at the screen is the best approach :)

Stupid suggestion, but make sure the USB cable is high quality and USB 2 compatible.

there is no difference between any of the usb cables as far as data speed is concerned
