What upgrade will yield the best rendering time results?

I don't work very much in 3d max but I am using my computer to do the rendering work for the 3d file someone has given me- using vray in 3d max design 09

Currently I'm running a modest intel e6600, nvdia 8600gts and 8gb of ram (800mhz, that's all my mobo supports). Because this rendering takes so damn long (it's an animation), and I have more animations to render in the upcoming future...which should I be upgrading? My CPU or Vid Card? Or is it even worth it? Will I see performance gains that can justify 300$? I have no clue how 3D max is optimized so I registered here to ask the professionals!
