| Unsure how to Model this |

Hey I am new here but I don't know how to model this certain part of something. My question is how I would go about modeling this. Here's two pictures of the part I am trying to model.
I've tried box modeling but I don't know a way to make the sides round like in the picture. What I am trying to model is the end of a sword hilt. I'm using a trial version of max 2013 and I have had 2 years of using max 2012 although I didn't learn much.

Poly modelling and turbosmooth would be best.

^ Yes. And why start from box? Start from the handle which is circular, then extrude edges out to form what appear to be rings. To me it looks like 5 rings (juding from this too: http://www.fevereon.com/props/bigimages/drakengard_3.jpg), then the bottom two you would work on separately (separate object or element) and move some of the verts up toward the handle..

As they have said. Poly model and turbo smooth it. Hit F1 it will be your friend.
I am also curious to your chosen method of time travel... that is the only logical excuse I can fathom for your ability to have been using 3D Studio Max 2012 for two years.

Ok. Thanks for the replies. Lion I had meant to say 2011 although if I had time travel I would let you know lol. Anyways I'll start modeling it with your suggestions when I get the chance. I didn't start with a box model. I originally started with a cylinder but wasn't too sure how to get that shape since I was really only taught box model.
