Ultramon is destroying my life.
show user profile  LionDebt
Slight exaggeration, but only one of my monitors 'turns on' at start up. They are both detected... both in nVidia>Display Settings, and the windows Control Panel>Display. The other monitor is definitely 'there', since I can drag windows across to it, and if I'm lucky, drag them back over to the working monitor.

Most frustratingly is that it seems to 'turn on' randomly. I'd be using max for a couple hours when all of a sudden it will start working... usually at times when I'm about to leave the house or finish maxing, since the frustration of having two screens but only one working is driving me loopy.

I've reinstalled drivers, unplugged monitors, troubleshot about a hundred things, tested both monitors, tested each monitor individually. No one method of tinkering brings the monitor to life, happens completely randomly.

Only thing I can think of having changed since this started happening, would be having installed UltraMon. I love it to bits and have tried a reinstall of it too. My earliest system restore also failed to resolve it (restore was before UltraMon was installed).

Halp?

When I installed ultramon (ages ago) I just went for whatever the feature was called that stretched your task bar across both monitors.

Right now (monitor kicked into life about 20 minutes ago :s) I have:
4 Starcraft map editing windows open.
Spotify
ICQ main window
Starcraft II game
AIM main window
3 AIM conversations
1 ICQ conversation
2 Notepad files
1 Excel spreadsheet
3DS Max
2 Windows Explorers
and 2 Google Chrome windows open, one is this messaging applet whatever. And the other window has about 20 tabs open.

I hate it when the windows get 'collapsed' into similar groups and enjoy having them all easily accessible at the bottom of my screen :3

@Horizon - yap. Tried every possible which way that I could swap the cables, the monitors, the card slots, etc, nothing kicks this monitor into action - except when the moons are aligned and someone, somewhere has stubbed there toe.

"When I installed ultramon (ages ago)"

Upgrade to the most recent version and see if problems persist.

Does that mean it's always your secondary monitor making problems or it's the exact one whichever way you put them?

It's always the secondary monitor. Currently have two Samsung 2043BW monitors (drivers up to date and everything). Monitor 1 - is secondary, with digital cable plugged into my GTX 240. The blue light flashes, it is recognised in device manager, it is on - but nothing shows up on screen.

Monitor 2 - is the main monitor, with VGA cable plugged into my GTX 240. It works fine.

When I unplug my main monitor and use only the (currently faulty) monitor 1, it works fine. Switching which monitor is my main does not cause the 'faulty' monitor to start working.

It could possible be application based. When I run certain programs on full screen (games, videos occasionally etc) on my main monitor, the secondary monitor will fire into life!

Tedious, but works.

Starting Skyrim just became the first thing I do on my computer now (hehehe)

Similar things, though not the same, happen to me. Once every three times, more or less, both of my monitors fire up, while the other two only the secondary turns on.
I always have to go to "monitor, customize, extend monitors...ecc.."
Don't really know the solution but I'm really trying to understand where the problem is...

Are the symptoms related to Ultramon or Windows?
(= does problem persist when Ultramon is uninstalled?)

This is a long shot, but here it goes...
