Ugly Shadows
show user profile  Nolan
Hey,

I switched computers for faster rendering. I am using the mental ray renderer with some arch & design materials. Also this computer is 3ds max 2012 and the old one was 2011. Now the shadows look really "specky" did I mess something up in the settings when switching?

Are you sure it's the shadow, and not the samples on the glossy reflection in the material being too low?

I dont see any shadows. Do you mean the reflections? from the look of the jaggy silhouette, you need to turn up the anti aliasing.

Might be down to the glossiness samples number?
Edit: touché Nick

thats just crappy reflection, up the sample count (generally the lower the glossiness the more samples you need)

And I'd advise tuning materials individually rather than using the global controls (which is better suited to producing fast previews)
