Tutorial trouble need some help
show user profile  Radomized
I am currently trying to get into building heads. I looked at this tutorial on this website,http://www.secondpicture.com/tutorials/3d/3d_modeling_of_a_human_head_3ds_max_01.html
and can't seem to figure it out. It wants me to start off by making a plane but when I do, it comes out really weird. How I do make a plane look like the plane in that picture? Because my mine come out fine in the front viewport but just a edge almost in the right side. I also seem to have trouble copying the polygons I know how to do it but can't seem to get it right. Can you guys help me in anyway?

A plane has no depth therefore from the right it would appear to just be a line.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I think their way is just dumb and really annoying. Anyone else think so? I'll stay with Mad dog bomber's I think.

I also can't understand why they say 8 polygons while I think it would need 16 because the right side is a side view meaning what you do the front won't affect the right viewport. I'd like to know what you guys think.

I'll probably figure it out but it seems she must angle the polygons a certain way to make it so there are 8 because if you put them straight you would need much more than 8 more like 16 I have figured out. It would look like a mouth with a hing.

Yes they angle in the top view. The 3rd of the 3d's.

Oh wow I figured it out now. I feel dumb. Thanks. What do you mean 3rd of the 3ds? It is definitely angled on the side a little bit right? I mean if you didn't you would not anything on the right side.

So when you do the symmetry. You make a full mouth? Joey do you think I just stay with Mad dog bomber.

if i'm understanding this right you need to appreciate the mouth is about half a cylinder
if you make it all in the front viewport it will be flat- that's why it's brought into place according to the side ref
match the corner of the mouth to the front, then drag it to match the side, then match up the rest going to the center
and continue till the whole mouth is shaped like ... well a mouth

Ok, so I think I got it I put the half of mouth to side a little bit to see what I looks like ona side view then mold it, so it works that way. Then, add symmetry. I think I should post a picture or link one.

So thats what it looks like for some reason I forgot to put it on the right side, so it is bent in not out as it should be. Let me know if this is right. I'm sorry for my lack of understanding about this I just can't figure it out. I got the mad dog one but not thsi one and I think mad dog's could be a little harder.

It looks nothing like a mouth and I didn't use a reference I was just trying to see if I can get the technique down. Thats only the first to third step I think. If thats what it suppose to look like let me know.

You really need to learn the basics of using max.Have you done the tutorials that come with max?
I can't tell what that is you've posted so it's hard to say if it looks right.
Here's some more face tutorials that may explain things a little better.
Keep at it you'll eventually understand how things work.
