So there is this script that works on an object but not a group, any easy way to do this than to attach 50 objects?

There's also a little button next to "Attach." Click it and select all the objects you want to attach.

select all the objects you want, then go to utilities tab, push Collapse, now you have them as one single object.

Check out Select Objects By Bitmap Tex....

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/select-objects-by-bitmaptex

It does tons of things and has an attach/detach section that does just about everything you could want when attaching and detaching, and has functions like centering pivot, renaming etc... and it's much quicker than the standard attach method in Max. The select and clean sections are pretty useful too.
