turn a cube edit poly back into a box...

i'm using a script that reacts best to "box's" instead of the edit poly cubes i've got...

is there a way to convert the poly's back to what max sees as boxes?

No, you can't go back to a primitive once you've collapsed it into an editable poly unless it's just an edit poly modifier that you can remove from the stack.
But you could always create a new box, using snaps as you create it to quickly match it to your current boxes.

If your editable poly boxes are all the same size (and there are lots of them) there'll be a script that can replace selected objects.
