New TurboSquid Control Panel
show user profile  owtdor
Logged in today and saw a new control panel. It now has ratings for contributors based on how much they have sold.
There is also what they call the "Squid Guild" and in order to join it you have to agree not to sell ANY of your models ANYWHERE else. The thing is, you have to join to maintain royalty rates of 50%. It appears that the royalty rates are dropping to 40% if you don't agree.

What do you all think about the new changes, and what "level" are you? I am currently Silver and feel I am now at a disadvantage compared to other big sellers that was not there before.

I'm still in the bottom category though only just sold my first model yesterday.

First i heard about this was the guy over at 3d Studio going a bit mad about it, talking aout blackmail and the likes. Though having only just started with these sites i'm not to sure what to make of it other than the obvious 10% decrease. I think i'll leave my stuff on 3dstudio for a little while longer but if nothing sells i may be as well to make my stuff exclusive and join up with TS.

I guess I need to boost the quality of my offerings. Took me over 5 years to get within $400.00 of Gold...

It IS blackmail... Besides - TS already has the lowest royalty payout, and lowering it further to 40% for non-exclusive members is just a baaaad call. Fuck'em - they claim to be the leading 3D-marketplace... it's not in the company->vendor-relationship department though.
The forum has been buzzing with rather unhappy vendors since before the official announcement.

TS doesnt care about their biggest asset : the vendors.

Cheers

since i only sell on turbosquid anyway i signed up to get my extra 1% on sales (being a bronze seller)... i can see why these new changes would piss alot of people off... but being such a big player they can do whatever they want, if they can make more money this way, they will.

one thing I'm totally confused with is how they managed to get a photo of me on my avatar, its a photo of me and my girlfriend both looking very drunk! i never uploaded this photo anywhere, don't even see it on my computer, i have no idea how they got hold of this photo to use as my avatar, i mean its on facebook but cant think where else. i would never have chosen it myself... anyone else have a photo chosen for them from somewhere?

Oddly, and even though I know the royalty payouts are horrible. I love the new "dashboard" squidguild thing they've got going on. I'm about $500 away from Emerald!

One of the features that I absolutely adore is the statistics on keyword searches, highest sales, searches with highest sales etc etc.

Although, it absolutely wreaks of "rich get richer" which is more common knowledge than a crying shame, but it's still a crying shame. Folks who are clearly already doing well (ie, over $10,000 in sales) get access to key information to help them make more money, when the little guy just starting will get diddly squat.

P.S.
Chairs... people want chairs! It's no real surprise that arch-vis products will sell well though.

You got the "Chairs" response too? I wonder if they are true representations of what people are looking for, or if TS is just saying that to boost that section?
And I agree about the part where you get better tools after you sell more. If you sold more, you wouldn't need the tools! Give them to the newer people too!

Omg this is just lame.
Obviously it's in their best interest to give good sellers help on how to sell even better, it's all about the money.
Sucks though, as if the 24 bucks I made for my sales so far after the 50% deduction wasnt low enough lol.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I’m glad that you guys like the new dashboard for your accounts. It took a lot of effort internally to get that out, but between it and the new Search interface, we are already seeing a lot of positive responses from both our clients and you. Based on your conversations, there are a couple of things here that I’d like to clarify:

1. The highest royalty rate is 60% (provided the vendor doesn’t want to drive sales from their own sites to TS, where it can go up to 80%). This means that TurboSquid’s overall portion of each sale is going to go down, and most vendors will see an increase in their sales and return on their efforts - far more than they did for all the other knock-offs if they go exclusive in the SquidGuild. TurboSquid will get other benefits from this exclusivity (http://blog.turbosquid.com/2009/08/03/turbosquid-squidguild/), and it will also provide us with the ability to offer our vendors more unique opportunities in markets you may not have considered or had any access to previously.

2. Part of our plan all along has been to provide our vendors more information and data to help them be successful. This is something that has been asked for by the vendor base and it is something we’ve wanted to give you access to. One of the reports we now give is which categories are top selling (like chairs), and if you are at the highest level, you can see the percentage of products that sell in each category along with lots of other useful information. These are the categories we’ve always had, so the data you’re seeing for “chairs” is a current snapshot of the real trends on our website as to what is selling.

3. What may be most surprising is that there are a number of talented vendors who have quit their day jobs and are making a good living off of their sales on TurboSquid. You can earn real money with TurboSquid, and this message may not have been properly communicated to other vendors who only expect to make “beer money” each month. We’ll be providing a lot of useful information on topics like “best practices for publishing” so that the professional artists who use our site will find what they’re looking for and our entire community of vendors can be successful too.

Understand that we are indeed working to try and help our vendors and are NOT looking to shackle them. You are free to join the SquidGuild at any time (there is no deadline to join), and if you feel you’re not seeing the benefits at any later date after you’re a member, you can opt back out. It’s a completely open door policy here that we hope you will be willing to try. If not, you're still welcome and we'd be happy to help you sell your content and make you successful. If you still have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.

Sincerely,

-=Beau

The problem is not the new features, which, for the most part, are nice.
The problem is the blackmail scheme TS is running. It's pretty much "Join SquidGuild, or else..." - and with "or else" they mean "we lower your royalty".

- besides. the 60% that only the top sellers get, is the minimum you get at other sites.
I'm sorry, but it's hard NOT to see this, as punishment for the small vendors and the hobbyists.
But I take it that in reality you wan't to "weed out" the small ones. Unfortunately, in the process you also make it really hard for newcomers to get a foot in.

I'm not a big fan of monopolizing markets - and I'm definetely not a fan of blackmailing...

Cheers

I don't need to defend TS by any means, but you have to consider that they are the best place for vendors and buyers alike in our industry. You may get a higher royalty payout at other sites, but will you actually sell as many assets on those other sites? I personally don't think so. And I guess the main gripe people are having is that if they join the SquidGuild then they lose the right to sell on other sites?

I don't know... personally, I accept the fact that TS are giants, they have very little competition, and everybody knows about them. Whenever someone comes here asking for a model, where do we usually point them? TurboSquid!

Although, the whole tax-treaty thing is a major pain in the rectum. I look forward to the day when that process is made as simple as possible.

Why I absolutely hate TS:
-they make me fill, scan and send a W8 form every now and then, no stock site does that
-aside from taking 50%, they take another 30% for tax, no stock site does that
-they don't support moneybookers, paypal doesn't like my country, so I'm forced to wait 2 weeks for a check, pay a fee to cash it in, and wait for 2 months for clearance
-when the amount reaches the minimum payout you set, they only send earning till the previous month, sometimes leaving 20$ behind, no stock site does that

That said, they are the only model selling site that ever made me any money, I tried 2 others and never sold anything for years. I'll definately join tha guild or whatever it's called

my 2 cents

I actually make an almost equal amount on The3DStudio as I do on TS. Same models, only a wee bit cheaper. No way I would get that back from a measely 8% (my present status according to SquidGuild) extra on TS exclusively.

SquidGuild is for those who have already made the decission to make selling stock models on TS a living (or a serious second job).

Cheers
