Tube/Cylinder rotate and tilt without wobble?
show user profile  jojo
I'm working in 3ds Max 2010, I've used max script to rotate a tube 10,000 degrees over 1000 frames and now I need the tube to also tilt at a 45 degree angle, from side to side while it is rotating. At this moment, when I tilt it using a central pivot point and using gizmo and autokey it creates a wobble which makes it look very unrealistic. It is a mechanical device so it needs to look accurate. If anyone could assist that would be of great.

My computer system:
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
16GB RAM, 64-bit System
Windows 7

Video might help, not sure what you're talking about.

A script to rotate things? Seems ... a bit excessive :P

When using max and you have to rotate an object at quite a few revolutions on a particular axis, it seems to go to a point and revert. It doesn't do the amount of revolutions that you need. I want to rotate a cylinder so it appears to be rolling like a wheel at a very fast pace, doing maybe 3 revolutions per second without using the reactor. Then max gets all messed up, it starts rotating backwards and forward instead of in one smooth constant rotating action.

I tried using a dummy and connecting it to the cylinder and I was unsuccessful with that as well and then I came across a script. I went into my graph editor and according to a tutorial I followed I had to go and select, on the rotation of the cylinder and change it from EULER XYZ to a TCB control and I was also unsuccessful with that.

I had success with the script, getting the cylinder rolling at a constant in one direction on its axis, but now I need it to still roll but also tilt on a pivot point which is at the center of the cylinder which I've tried to do using normal key frames but now it wobbles and it doesn't look mechanically accurate which it needs to.

Here's screenshots of the cylinder in max

The thicker arrow shows the directions of the rotation and the thinner arrow the direction of the angled tilt.

Thank you :)

Try this:
-create a dummy to rotate the cylinder. You can use out-of-range type constant to continuously rotate
-create a second dummy to tilt the cylinder
-align all objects to pivot(center of cylinder)
-select all objects> hierarchy>pivot>affect pivot only>align to world

Thank you so much, very helpful it worked :) I did try a dummy before but it didn't work then, you're idea worked perfectly. Thank again!
