Trying to be clever with Xref Objects

In Max scene file "1" I've created a library of components for a shelving system.

In scene file "2" I've created a few shelf assemblies by instancing xref objects from scene "1".

Now I have a shop layout that I'm working on in scene "3". I have dragged xref object configurations from scene "2" into the shop, and can still retain the full ability to edit components in scene "1", having that change cascade down. Winner.

However, I hit a wall.

If I use "Groups" to define the assemblies in scene 2 then they're not dynamically updated in scene 3 if I change those groups. I don't want to use "Containers" - they're just as rubbish and confusing as Groups. I've not tried a linked hierarchy yet, but I suspect that I would need to xref every component into scene 3 if I did that, and I'd hate that option.

Does anyone know a simple solution?

I've just tried linking objects to dummies, and Max won't intelligently understand when a hierarchy has been added to (for example if I add shelves to an assembly, the scene file "3" doesn't receive that update).

Any help gratefully received!
