Tree - wind - animate
show user profile  missy
Hey folks

As usual I'm looking but not seeing!

I'm looking for how to add wind to a tree, I've tried a couple of ways but nothing is happening.

Anyone got a tutorial tucked away?

Please, please please!

I need to make trees in 3 wind states, no wind, fresh wind and strong wind. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Yeah I tried that BEFORE I came here. Thanks.

and yes I went through the tutorial for windy flag and controlling foliage with max script is Not what I need.

Nor can I afford to buy the plug-ins for it

If you just want it simple and fast add a FFD modifier to the tree.

Then animate the top of the tree moving, using the top of the FFD's control points, and you should be fine.

if you don't have budget for extra plugs i'd suggest volume select modifier + several noise deformations with different noise scaling and phases.

Ok thanks Pil and Kb :)

I shall try these both out now.

As it is, I am tempted to send our photographer/ camera man out to capture trees in the 3 different states and slap it on the background.

My brain is bruised, I struggled and was unhappy with all. I'll try again tomorrow

* does anyone else find it totally ridiculous that max has trees and it has wind yet no proper way of making windy trees

I usually just put a primitive bone rig in the tree following its major branches and setting a seperate spline ik for every seperate branch then link it together, set spring constraint to controlling end helpers along the branching points and tips and use wind as force, looks great imo but its a bit of work (~100 objects and 30 mins) that kind of animation while good in background and from a distance looks kind of crappy close up tho since the leaves dont move individually so to deal with that for closeup shots depending on whether the leaves are solid geometry or added as hair n fur i use either cloth or hair n fur's dynamics (with the latter being preferred choice since its much easier to get it working properly)

This method is flawed however since it is very linear and fails to consider any kind of in-tree wind or motion dynamics so if you are looking for realism id stick with low-medium breeze with this kind of setup
