3D Tracking (matchmoving) today?
show user profile  Nanne
Around 2007-2009 I was into 3D tracking or matchmoving quite a bit. I tried out lot's of softwares in my different schools.

First I used Icarus it was free and really good. Then MatchMover entered the stage as one of the leading tracker (this was just before Autodesk bought it). Boujou seemed to be one of the best but it was so expensive that my schools couldn't afford it, and I rather looked into a cheaper alternative.
Then at my next school we used PFMove that was a cheap, wizard-style, alternative to the PFTrack, both from The Pixel Farm. I then discovered SynthEyes, that was a really cheap and amazingly good software.

But since then I haven't looked into it at all. Where is it today?
Autodesk are now giving away MatchMover for free, which seems like a good indication that that is NOT the way to go if your looking for a professional tracking software. http://apps.exchange.autodesk.com/MAYA/en/Detail/Index?id=appstore.exchange.autodesk.com%3aautodeskmatchmover_windows64%3aen

After Effects CS6 and above has a 3D tracker built in that does a good job, and I found a script that that exports the scene to 3ds Max.

Or is it the 3D tracker inside NukeX that is being used?

I just took a look at PFTrack again and found this video. It look really impressive that it can do camera tracking, object tracking, motion capture and image modelling all in one. Check it out!

Are you working with matchmoving and 3D tracking, can you share your experience? What's your favourite tool and workflow?

Was it just me or did that seem really quick and dirty? I could see using something like that for fast results, but for a larger project I personally would look at synthEyes. Don't know what else is really on the market but I've seen a few studios use it and in my experience it works well..

But in the infamous words of Han Solo - "I got a bad feeling about this" when it comes to that AE plugin when it comes to any heavy motion tracking work. Again, I don't know anything really outside of SythEyes.

How good... or bad... is MatchMover?

Is it a "good enough" alternative for a freelance artist that don't get that many jobs that includes tracking? Or for the school that I'm teaching at that only have one or two lessons in tracking, just to teach the basics and fundamental theory of tracking.

It seems to be able to handle object tracking and even motion capture, that's cool.

i really like matchmover. Its simple and easy to learn and works quite welll. I Like the fact you can track things via colored surfaces as well as point tracking, seems to be quite stable.

Cool, thanks donvella. Perhaps it's a good starting point then, considering that it is more advance then AE's tracker (can do object tracking) but still is free :)

But if money is not un issue... SynthEyes, PFTrack or Boujou? The flexibility of PFTrack intrigues me...
