So far only a placeholder for ideas...
I've got no real motivation for something I really want to model right now, but I've been thinking about maybe doing some atoms and molecules. Problem there is to make it look interesting..
Any feedback/inspiration would be good =)

This is an interesting way to make atoms and molecules, but I'll keep looking for some inspiration.

it will be nice an animation of some molecules when collisioning a wave propagate on their surfaces...

So, been looking into making a watch and it's mechanics, as it looks like a good challenge for me. Atoms became too boring. =P
But as usual, I've got problems right from the beginning. I can feel it's been a while since I've produced anything decent in max now, and could need some pointers.
So, chamfering. This is a big problem I usually have. And yes, I've seen the grotey tutorial, and watched lots of tutes, but still cant get it right =)
Heres an image to show what the problem is. I want sharp edges on this gear, but it messes up obviously. I do see the problem, as I've got a lot of 3 sided polygons after chamfer, and I could probably clean it up by hand, but there is 50 small points on this gear, and that would just take too long. So, how would you go about to fix this?

This is what I would try to do (Blue for sure... Other color and blue if blue alone fails... To get that triangle out of there)... Keep in mind that I am probably wrong..

There's a video tutorial that might help on www.mrbluesummers.com I can't paste the link for some reason - iPhone is playing up. Look up video tutorials and modelling section. It's Monday movie number 10 I think about spline modelling.

Just model it with enough segments in the first place and chamfer the edges using multiple segments and leave it unsmoothed, that will look just as good. and be far quicker to render.
Check out luima's video here to see what I mean. you wont be aboe to tell the difference if you do it right

I've had no time for max recently, but thought I'd give it a try this night. So, been playing around some more tonight, and I'm off to bed now. But I just wanten to give you guys an idea of what I'm aiming for here..
Stil alot of work to do, but it's a start at least =) Materials, lights, and general positioning is all just a test for now. It's just put together quickly, with lots of errors.

those wip models are in need of some serious anistropic based brushed metal materials... what r/s?

Thanks guys =) Theres is a lot of obvious errors on it for now, but i'm just focusing on getting all the modelling done before I go ahead and place everything perfectly.
@bolteon: Rendering with Vray. Tried o use a brushed stainless steel look, but since I'm using the VrayEdgesText in the bump slot to round of all the edges (since these are all extruded splines, and difficult to smooth.) it doesn't look too good. Also UV mapping is simply applied to the whole thing, just for a test render. Lots of work to do.
My biggest problem is that there is soo many small parts on this watch, and I've got no idea how I'll finish this all off.. But it's gonna be interesting to see =)
