Never done this before, but I'm gonna try to model an ant somehow... and further details I'll have to figure out later!

Not sure if blogger will let me hotlink, but Photobucket was refusing to work:

nice, are you going to detach the mandibles later ?
" Difficult, yes. Impossible , no..."

Thanks Joey!
Good point Davious. To be honest I'm making it up as I go.
I've never done any modelling of this type before - only ever a little box modelling and work with primatives. I followed the Hard Surface Essentials tutorials by Grant Warwick a few weeks ago and that seemed to make a lot of sense. This is my first attempt at putting it into practice, so any other tips are very welcome!
If anyone's expecting me to rig and unwrap it later then I'll pre-warn you that I've never done that either..! One challenge at a time though.
Here's a reference image... I think I've got the hotlinking to work now:

For a while there the legs were really bugging me.

What style are you going for? The legs seem way too thick for a real ant, but I like it this way

Thanks Dice,
yeah, you're right about the leg thickness - I'd not picked up on that. Been staring at it so long that I missed the obvious.
As for style, I was just happy to find that I could model something vaguely organic. I think I'll try to make it as photorealistic as possible for this project.
I was gonna do a booted foot coming over the top, but one of the other competitors seems to be on the same mental track with a fly and flyswatter.
I guess I should start doing some sketches for an overall image concept now that I'm on track with the model.

Thinned out the legs, added antennae and eyes, sharped up the mandibles:

That's starting to look quite nice, I like the subtley exaggerated legs.

Appreciated, though my 3D skills have a long way to go to catch up to my animation. :)
