Maxforums Tournament III - Round 1
show user profile  Cosmic Fool
Round Ø is over and the scores have been tallied. It was a close round and I know the judges probably had to make some hard decisions.

First, second and third place go to:

1. Bobbyboy
2. Killerbee2
3. Stevegek

Honourable mentions go to Reeves1984 and Erne for a job well done.

The images were judged based not only on the overall final image, but on how well they fit the theme.

Since this was the introduction round (calling it the qualifying round led to a lot of confusion) everyone who submitted an image was given the same amount of points. The competition will be much more fierce in the coming rounds as points will be awarded for skill and creativity with certain criteria being worth more.

The contest site: has been given a major overhaul and now includes past and current round info, as well as galleries, rules and up to date rankings. Go check it out.

And now without dragging this on any longer (it's friggen 3am here) I present to you:

- Round 1 -

"What're you doing?! ... Makin' it look mean!"

Objective: Take something from everyday life and give it some attitude. Whether it's a coffee mug wrapped in barbed wire, a mailbox with razor sharp teeth or even a twisty mountain range, the viewer's first impression should be "that thing, place, person, etc looks mean!" The focus on this round is to create character in something which is arguably one of the hardest things to do in art.

Bonus: 2 points to the first user who posts telling me what movie the Round 1 theme is quoted from.

Scoring: TBA.

Duration: 2 Weeks - Friday July 7, 2006 until 11:59 pm, Friday July 21, 2006 (Maxforums time -7 GMT).

Format: No larger than 800x600
, multiple images or videos will be accepted. However, only one image is necessary. Do not feel that you have to do any more.

Software: You can use any 3d program and render you want. Post production is allowed and encouraged.

Who can participate: Any registered member of Maxforums can enter the tournament at any time, regardless of how many rounds have gone by.

Submission: Submissions can be sent to the e-mail address below. Make sure you include the words "Maxforums Contest Submission" followed by your username in the title. This helps me sort through all the e-mail I get and will ensure that I don't miss your submission. I will try to e-mail you as soon as possible once I have recieved your submission.

Posting: Please post in the Work in Progress forum and Label your thread: Maxforums Tournament - Round Number - User Name"

Unfinished Work: If the deadline is approaching and you can't get your entry done in time, Submit it anyway and just let me know it's not finished. You will still get partial points which is better than nothing. With this scoring system you need all the points you can get, so it would be in your best interest to submit whatever you've got. I may not have time to dig through the forum and scoop all the unsubmitted images this time. If I don't see it, you won't get any points.

And there you have it, the real tournament has officially begun. I'm still collecting info from sponsors so there should be an announcement about prizes soon. I'll post the scoring criteria in the morning.

Good luck to everyone, and thanks to everyone (judges and competitors) who's participated so far.

Congrats Bobby! Well, I either can't help feeling that Erne should have placed much higher.

Hopefully the judges(?) have written proper critiques of the top 3 images so we all can make the most out of the learning side of this tournament.

My favorite was Killerbee's second image... the one with the tea-bag. I loved all aspects of this image. The background, the lighting, the materials and the idea behind it.

I think there were alot of good images. The experience level is obvious a little different, but one can see the effort made, so thumbs up to everyone... I'm glad I'm not one of the judges. Maybe we could do some kind of polling of the users favourite images?

now... if I could just pursade killerbee to let me have a look see at his max-file so I can learn his technique :-) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Theres a danish forum in which the contests are judged by user polls... That works quite well.
I think a users pick of the round sort of thing could be good...

The quote rings a big ol' bell but I can't quite place it. I seem to remember it from some sci-fi show, but I'm going to guess it's from the '04 remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Insanity is just a state of mind
