How to make good tilable textures in less than 5 mins.
show user profile  Dub.
Here is a little tut on making tilable good textures in photoshop.

First we'll start with a typical texture grabbed fromhttp://www.cgtextures.com

Notice how it is distorted and has overall tone variations. These are usually things that make tiled textures look crappy. Thats why we will remove these problems.

first thing to do is double click on the background layer and change it to a proper layer like so:

Now you need to use the mesh warp tool (CS2 only - prior photoshop ver users will have to figure out another way to do this) Try to straighten out the image. Align straight lines in the image with the guide you already made (you did didn't you?).

Next crop the layer to get rid of the crap round the edges.

Now we will deal with the unevenness of tone. Duplicate the layer.

Now apply a 50 pixel median operation. Effect-Noise-Median

Invert the layer (Ctrl + I if you're feeling professional)

Desaturate the layer by hitting Ctrl + U and setting the saturation to -100

Hit Ctrl + L to apply a levels operation and set the black point and white point on the top and bottom of the graph like so:
--

Add a 10 pix box blur to remove any banding that will appear if you're working in 8 bit.
Now set the top layer to "Soft Light" mode and set the layer opacity to about 70% (so the image looks tonally flat)

Add a "Curves" adjustment layer at this stage to put a bit of punch back into the image. Heres the curve I used:

Your layer stack should now look like this:

and your image like this:

Now, flatten your image and use the offset operation to shuffle your image to the right. We're only going to make this image horizontally tilable. If you want to make it tilable in both axis, you'll need to move it up as well. Heres what we have:

Use the magic healing brush to paint out the seam.

Which will leave you with the following texture, suitable for tiling down a wall or something.
You have to be smart with tiling. If it's a hero wall, then you won't want to have one texture obviously tiled accross the screen. if it's behind some crates or behind some pipes in a dark tunnel, then it'll be fine.

Good luck and feel free to suggest changes.

Rhys.
