tif files not displaying correctly

I am rendering out 16bit-colour TIF files and they appear fine in max and photoshop but in windows explorer and when printed they are greyed out with banding lines, and the image is also cropped weirdly.

It was my understanding that you should render out 16bit TIF files in linear space, adjust gamma in post. 16bit allows for more colour depth.

If I save out as an 8-bit TIF window explorer is fine and so is printing, bit I have reduced my colour range.

Is photoshop the only way I can view images above 8-bit? what is the correct process for printing? does bit affect printing? Can you print 16bit, 32bit images?

I'm totally lost by all of this.
