the ultimate system
show user profile  jarrod
a couple of things.

first, i have the unique opportunity to build the ultimate system. my current (and new) employer will build me the system i choose. i work primarily within 3ds max 2010 and as a senior environmental designer my projects are vast and detail orientated. any suggestions and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

second, as i had mentioned above my current employer will build me the system of my dreams. they have currently provided me with the following. i am interested on any thoughts on this configuration.

MS Windows XP Professional SP3
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHZ, 3.2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3470 - Dell Optiplex

thank you,

jarrod

have you not considered 64 bit 8 core processing, 12 plus gig of ram and a full 64 bit operating system? your suggestion is quite low spec for a dream machine. I'm sure other peeps here will give you a better idea of a dream spec.

I have a friend who, on a much lesser system would kick your ass when it came to environments, In fact he does most of his work on a bloody laptop !! get over yourself.

Getting XP at this point is silly with Windows 7 just around the corner. Either wait or get a version of Vista that offers a free upgrade to 7. The LGA 775 socket is dead or at least dying. No future upgrade path.

Also seconding everyone saying that's really not a good spec for a "dream" machine. I'm on more than that! i7 920 @ 2.66GHz (not OCing until i can buy a better cooler), 6GB RAM will upgrade to 12 later), Radeon HD 4770. It only cost about £800. What's your budget for this?

"3.2 GB RAM"?

.2? sooo three 1GB sticks... and a 200MB stick? Am I missing something?

3GB of ram now'a'days is just mediocre. If price is no object why not max it out?

Strat didn't play his Mac+Bootcamp card. I'm surprised. ;)

I`d go for at least a million gigabyte ram. Nothing else, just that and a fancy toaster..

[edit]

In fact, i was thinking about `papering` my room with ram-sticks. Just to be on the edge. Figured it`d cost me around 7 million to complete the task.

LOL!!

if it was me I'd go with dual 6 core opterons, or wait for the 8 core to come out, or even go with the 4 opteron socket Tyan motherboards that can attach an expansion card and get an extra 4 sockets more (thats 8 x4cores).. those are dream machines..

but based on what they gave you just make sure you get dual or tri PCIe slots now so you can wait until gpu rendering comes available..

can max actually multithread that many cores? i know it does 4 fine, but can it add in more just like that and work efficiently or only work well for 4, and maybe 8 and then it doesnt really make alot of difference with more?

More cores are not a problem as I understand it. Depends on the renderer and terms of the licence though.
