The room
show user profile  9krausec
Been working on this room for a while as one of my first attempts at indoor lighting. Here are some WIP. The bookshelf is an installment of this project.

My ceiling lights have a halo around them because the light I am using is a photometric sphere. I tried a spotlight, but since the hotspot/falloff can only go up to 175.9 degrees and not passed there was a dark rim around the whole top portion of the room. Any solutions?

Also I am having an issue with my lamp shade material. I want to to make it seem that some of the light is bleeding through. Would an vraySS material be the correct path to take?

Another thing that I have noticed is that the Vray light material is lacking in map slots. I wanted to put a bump map on my ceiling lights but the only thing I could is a put a displacement map that instead of making indents on my object completely split and pushed my object apart. Ideas?

Here are the WIP shots. What do you think?

Come on guys! 50 views and not one CC reply... I am disappointed in you maxforums, maybe I will move to Cgsociety.... lol, jk). I figured out the lighting issue btw. I needed to switch it to uniform diffuse (using photometric sphere).

Where are those bipeds? =)

Good start mate. But not too much ti crit yet. I feel the light overall is a bit too even. Might just be me.

There we go! Thanks for the input. The "smoky effect" was intensional trying to not have so many sharp edges to give it more of a dreamy feel.

What would you suggest I do to give it more depth? Turn the natural lights down? Probably now that I think of it. I want to use this scene in a future short I wanted to do for a while now and the shelf in the second pick will be the main stage that a large portion of the short takes place. Just want to make sure that it has decent lighting.

Thank you for the replies!

Dude. Horizon. You can't sit down. You need to keep going. I WONT leave a man behind. We must progress and go forthward. Perhaps a bottle of jacks is in it for you at the finish.

with the lamp, you can model the glass add the bumps, etc. to it and place a separate light material, the things in the room seem out of proportion, and it seems you're trying to get proper lighting without checking for all these details, Image 1, shelf too high, almost as big as bookshelf, door knob should be at same height as real doors, door looks too small, the door hinges are attached to the wall instead of the frame, standing lamp is very large change art on the wall, I recommend to leave the carpet details for last since it eats a lot of rendering time when you need to pay attention to basic stuff, fix your textures.

I didn't even notice the door hinges. HAHA. Thanks for the CC. The reason the shelf is so I is because eventually a wooden doll will be flying on a paper airplane to the dresser top. I should be able to move it down a bit though. Thanks again! I will make some changes.
