The most basic question in Max i've ever asked ....
show user profile  Zman
Max was the first software I ever used to make KeyFrame animation.
That is why I took for granted the concept of switching to autokey and animating.
Since then I came across other keyframe software that had much simpler ways to set keys to parameters and I came to realize I might have been doing it wrong all along !

Lets say I want to animate a certain parameter from frame 40 to 50.
My technique is as follows:

activate auto-key
go to frame 40
change the parameter upwards and downwards again to the same value, this creates 2 keyframes.
go to frame 50
set another value
open curve editor
find that value and delete the keyframe in frame 0

Create the first key at 0 then drag it to wherever you need your first frame, negating the need to remove that key.

1. Rather than move slider I click "set key."
2. I always to a select all + set key on frame zero and leave it there for any moments I want to quickly reset a bone (yeah, I often forget to set up the "set to zero" for rotations).

My question: why delete frame zero?

Nick, not all parameters are assigned to an object.
How would I do that in a parameter in the environment effect like fog for example ?
The point is I still need to open up the curve editor and look for that parameter

You're right. I was thinking of character or scene animation.

There's no quick way that I know of, but it does highlight it in the tree. I find it a pain in the arse myself.

[edit] Were you addressing Nik, or me, Nick? Either way... :)

You could create a point or a dummy, add a custom attribute and wire it to the desired parameter. Works with environment effects, too.

Montgomery burns, yeah, doing that for every parameter Ill wanna animate is waaay quicker than my way !!

So im not mistaken in my "primitive way" ???
This is the way you'r supposed to animate in Max ?

I thought how you animated in Max was by getting Modo or C4D.

Have a small icon of a key next to every animateable parameter which will work like "set key" for that parameter.

....Like AE for an example (not 3D app of course....BUT...key icon next to every singe channel of everything)

All of a sudden MAX keyframing feels antiquated! Thanks Zman..... ;)

C4D also, ctrl-click on the little circle next to almost every parameter to keyframe it..

Mis Stabby, no need for all the fancy drawings, the icon is big enough for me to see !

But my question is - what type of telepathic magic makes that button know I want to animate the specific fog parameters I want to animate ??
