got me scared there. as long as theres something to replace it, then its all fine. especially when the replacement is 10,000 times faster

blah blah blah, and Intel's "electron processor" at 3thz his coming out soon too *sigh*. This isnt the first time some1's called the internet outdated, there was a system a while back that was supposed to only cost like $30 up front, and it plugged into an outlet and you plugged your computer into it and VOILA internet! over your power lines! at 3 gigabits/sec! yada yada yada. I believe it when I see a working model. Until then, yah, right up there with "Intel will be releasing a 3thz electron processor by 2010" bullshit.

I'm pretty sure CERN isn't bullshitting. They didnt develop it for home use though.
Bryan are you really that naive to believe what we got now is close to the best we can get?

I think the big problem with this was that a lot of houses have crappy electrical wiring (I know mine has) thus messing up the fast connection you should get. I do know that my brother has I think it was a router installed at home that uses such a technique, connection goes through the electrical wiring in his house and it works.
Also what about fiber optics?
We have a few cities here in The Netherlands that are cabling their whole city with fiberoptics to have faster internet, but most of our country isn't even thinking about it afaik.
It appears the cablecompanies don't want to start with the cabling before more providers get interested in this 'new' fast internet. And they are waiting for the cabling companies to lay the cables. Dollahdollah bills... Make that EuroEuro bills..:-D wtf can u do with a dollar nowadays lol.

BLoSk: No, I dont believe what we have now is the best, Im just saying I'll believe it when I see at least a working model (which I guess will be soon according to that report). And I believe intel DOES have a working electron processor that uses light to process data, but I seriously doubt its gonna be available for private use by 2010. Last I heard they only had it running basic math operations (like pie decimals etc).

Dylock: no those are little miniature wireless routers or somtn similar looks like, this was internet that was sposed to work through existing power lines at like ridiculous speeds so as to save the re-lying of cables specifically for faster networking.

The internet will never be dead/obsolete/replaced. It just gets upgraded. If most of the infrastructure is replaced with something else, that WILL be the internet. There will still be websites and email and whatever. The grid network is definitely a boon to the net, but it's very expensive to build on an effective scale... it has plenty of capacity and speed, but that's only because it's meant for researchers. The current internet would also be incredibly fast if there were just thousands of users instead of over a billion.

What will sooner change the internet is mass wifi. Connect cities with fibre, but the cities themselves are blanketed in high-speed wifi. Lots of places are working on this already. It'll go faster when we start using wifi devices as nodes that send and receive for all parties.
