Texturing UVW maps

I have made a complex model and tried to unwrap the different sections differently for the textures. Example; I selected the eyes and made the UVW maps. I made the texture for the eyes and tried to import it for the eyes. When i have the UVW for the eyes selected and apply the texture to selection, the eyes gets the texture perfectly but it applies the texture to the rest of the model as well. When i close the UVW window, the eyes gets unselected and the texture on the eyes goes away and the rest stays.

Now, i do have the different parts saves as the UVW maps, they are all using the square field fully. My question is do i have to unwrap everything together in the field so i have the entire robot on one texture map? If i do have to have all the parts, is there a way i could reload my maps i already have and resize/move them?
