I'm not new to 3ds max, but I am clueless when it comes to most of it. I am also interested as to how to set up seamless textures that you can paint on an object like this. I need to design a mud cave too. :P

a quick way to make seamless textures it so use the offset tool in Photoshop.
eg. if the texture is 512x512 offset by 256 and 256 and you'll end up with the edges of the texture in the middle. then you can use the healing or patch tool to help you patch up the seams. Offset back and away you go.

He who says it cannot be done is interrupting the man doing it.

Jareu is absolutely right.

I would like to add something to his words. If you're not using photoshop then you can use mirror option. this way your pixels on the edges will match to the tile besides main texture. Use U and V tiling plus mirror. It may not work all the time but mostly you can go ahead with it. Hope you got it. Let us know if not.
