First off, when you say opacity are you referring to something like a .png with transparency, or a .tga with an alpha channel?

Either way, there's an "opacity" slot in the material editor, just copy the texture you're using for diffuse into it, and have it set up so it looks like this:

"I flew over Egypt once"

^^^ That's what I thought, I've always used Mono Channel Output..... thought I was missing something.

If you're using .tga this bit of script will copy the diffuse to opacity and set the output to mono...saves a few mouse clicks.

(
for Obj in objects where isValidNode obj do
(
local mat = obj.material
if superClassOf mat == material AND isproperty mat "diffuseMap" AND classOf mat.diffuseMap == bitMapTexture do
(
mat.opacityMap = copy mat.diffuseMap
mat.opacityMap.monoOutput = 1
)
)
)
