Texture Map Help! (Davious and the beer bottle)
show user profile  9krausec
So lets say I am creating a texture on a computer (low poly computer). Everything on the computer is matt black, but the cool intel core 2 sticker is all shinny and has sparkles on it. The sticker is not marked out by extra geometry so a multi material wouldn't work. How would I allow for matt black for everything but shinny and nice looking for the sticker? (masking the sticker area).

I don't even know how to word what I want to do on google so I figured I would just ask around for a tut or something.

has been a long time ago since I used max or any 3d app, but aren't you looking for a specular map?

Alright! Thanks for all the replies. I actually know exactly what I want to do and how to do it now (took a while of putzing and some intense research (didn't really know what i was researching so thats why it took so long).

What I want to do is mask using an alpha channel and then use a composite material which will allow me to layer material on top of material.

For more control I need to set multiple UV maps with different mapping channels that match up accordingly with the materials mapping channel.

I think I got a grasp on it and do believe I would actually like to create my first tutorial on Maxforums to give back to the community a little. How do I do this? Should it be a Jing or a pdf?

Thanks for the help!

Edit: The reason this topic had Davious and the beer bottle is because we talked about doing just this over skype. FYI if any of you were wondering.

Edit Edit: Would any of you know how to do this using UV Unwrap? Is it the same concept?

Those pictures of me with the miller bottle were never published. If you have a copy be warned , I have good lawyers.

We will not discuss this again.

As far as I remember we selected the polys on the bottle that you wanted the sticker on, cloned them to a seperate object, applied a v small push modifier to it the applied the sticker material to that with a correct opacity map.

Groteys way is better.

Yeah all my work. Thanks! :)

here's the WIP thread if you're interested (its quite long)

As far as your question goes, im not really sure what you are asking...

can you be clearer.

Regarding the tutorial, I have made a members tutorial page on the left featured threads list that I will add you to if you make it. But you will have to host it yourself or put it on here as its own thread then I can link to it on the member tutorial page.

here's the page:

I hope you weren't serious about the whole lawyer/beer thing Davious. Couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not (if it was "haha" if it wasn't, "Really?")

Errmm... uh oh, works fine on my end :S

Edit
Oh shii... I know what I've done.

Double Edit
I had two directories for my jings... one was hidden in a "tutorials" folder, which I wiped when I put the new site online. Whoops! In the process of re-uploading the old directory now. Good job I made a backup!

You can also nestle blend maps inside of other blend maps, which is useful.
